Initiative 71 is an innovative move in DC where they have quite creatively legalized the use and possession of 2 ounces of marijuana while still prohibiting the sale of weed through dispensaries and stores.
Sounds complicated?
Well, here’s how things work.
Yes, under the Initiative 71 act, you can possess two ounces of marijuana and plant up to 6 plants in your house without being questioned by any law enforcement authority, but the sale of legal cannabis through stores and dispensaries is still prohibited.
The caveat is that there is no restriction on gifting marijuana products. What this means is that if you were to purchase something from any shop and for your purchase, the shopkeeper were to gift you a cannabis product, it would be considered completely legal.
