Will DC residents still require a doctor's prescription for purchasing marijuana?

Cannabis in DC

Marijuana has been decriminalized in Washington D.C. for quite some time now, but there are still some restrictions on its purchase and use. One of those restrictions is that you must have a doctor's prescription to buy marijuana from a dispensary in the district. However, there is talk of changing that law, and letting residents buy marijuana without a prescription. So, what does this mean for DC residents? Will they still need to get a prescription from their doctor to purchase marijuana? Or will the law be changed soon? We'll explore that question in this blog post.

Overview

It's important to note that marijuana is still not legal in Washington D.C., despite being decriminalized. This means that you can't just go out and purchase it from any old dispensary. You must go to a licensed dispensary, and in order to do that, you must have a doctor's prescription. The proposed change in the law would allow residents to self-prescribe marijuana, rather than having to get a prescription from their doctor.

Bowser signs bill allowing adult DC residents to self-prescribe medical marijuana

On Wednesday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser signed a bill that will allow adult residents of the District to self-prescribe medical marijuana. Under the new law, which takes effect in July 2022, D.C. residents over the age of 21 will be able to purchase and possess up to two ounces of marijuana for personal use. They will not, however, be able to grow their own plants or sell the drug.

The bill was passed unanimously by the D.C. Council last month. At the time, Bowser said she would sign it into law. "This is an important step forward for our city," Bowser said in a statement. "By making it easier for residents to access medical marijuana, we are expanding opportunities for people to find relief from a variety of conditions and illnesses."

The District is one of 33 states that have legalized the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. D.C.'s law is similar to laws in other states, but it does not require patients to get a doctor's recommendation or approval before purchasing the drug. The new law will also allow D.C. residents to possess up to six marijuana plants for personal use. However, they will not be able to sell the plants or the drug. Marijuana is still illegal under federal law, but the Trump administration has said it will not enforce federal law in states where the drug is legal.

Conclusion

So, what does this mean for DC residents? If the law is changed and residents are able to self-prescribe marijuana, it will be much easier for them to get their hands on the drug. However, it's important to remember that marijuana is still not legal in DC, so there may be some risks associated with self-prescribing. It's possible that the law may not be changed, and residents will still need to get a doctor's prescription to purchase marijuana. Only time will tell what will happen with this proposed change in the law.
